How to create a Gmail app password

The steps Google requires before Gmail will connect to another email app.

Why you need one

Google doesn't let apps that use IMAP sign in with your normal password. Instead you create an app password: a 16-character code that only works for the app you give it to and can be revoked at any time.

Step by step

It takes about two minutes.

  • Sign in to your Google Account and open Security.
  • Turn on 2-Step Verification if it isn't already on.
  • Open App passwords (search for it in your Google Account if you can't see it).
  • Enter a name such as Orbis Mail and create the password.
  • Copy the 16-character code and paste it into your email app as the password.

If App passwords is missing

Either 2-Step Verification is off, your account only uses security keys, or your Google Workspace administrator has disabled app passwords. Ask your administrator if you use a work account.
