Use Orbis Mail with Gmail and Google Workspace
Orbis Mail works with personal Gmail and Google Workspace business mailboxes over IMAP and SMTP. Google requires an app password for this, which takes a couple of minutes to set up.
Connection settings
- Incoming mail (IMAP)
- imap.gmail.com, port 993, SSL/TLS
- Outgoing mail (SMTP)
- smtp.gmail.com, port 465, SSL/TLS
- Username
- Your full Gmail or Google Workspace address
- Password
- A 16-character Google app password (not your normal password)
Good to know
- If App passwords is missing, 2-Step Verification is not switched on, or your Google Workspace administrator has disabled it.
- Workspace administrators may need to allow IMAP access in the Google Admin console.
Step by step
- 1
Turn on 2-Step Verification for your Google account (Google Account > Security).
- 2
Create an app password under Google Account > Security > App passwords and copy it.
- 3
In Orbis Mail choose Add mailbox, then pick Gmail / Google Workspace.
- 4
Enter your email address and paste the app password, then run the connection test.
Frequently asked questions
- Why can't I use my normal Google password?
- Google blocks normal passwords for apps that connect over IMAP. An app password is a separate code that only works for the app you create it for, and you can revoke it at any time.
- Will my Gmail labels appear?
- Yes. Gmail shows labels as folders over IMAP, so they appear in Orbis Mail's folder list.
